Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), was reportedly detained by UK immigration officials upon his arrival at Heathrow Airport on Friday morning.
According to Prof Chinyere Okunna, a confidant of Obi and Deputy Vice Chancellor of Paul University Awka, the politician was interrogated for several hours and handed a detention note, causing concern among well-meaning Nigerians.
Okunna, who worked with Obi as commissioner for information, commissioner for economic planning, and coordinating commissioner for development partners, revealed the information in a public statement on Wednesday.
She apologized for breaking confidentiality but stated that she could not remain silent about such a critical matter.
Obi, who has lived in the UK for an extended period, allegedly narrated his ordeal to Okunna privately, expressing pain over what he believes is an attempt to hound and chase him out of Nigeria.
Upon his arrival in London, he joined the usual queue to pass through immigration but was subsequently stopped and questioned for an extended period.
In the face of protests by some Nigerians who recognized him, immigration officials reportedly revealed that someone was impersonating Obi in the country, causing alarm bells to ring.
Okunna noted that this development is dangerous as it could implicate Obi in dubious and criminal activities.
She also mentioned that Obi has been under severe emotional torture, including phone bugging and constant surveillance, among other things.
