President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Garba Baba Umar, a retiring Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), as a Senior Security Adviser on International Police Cooperation and Counter-terrorism in the Office of the Minister of Police Affairs.
Umar’s appointment is aimed at enabling Nigeria to maintain its position as an Executive Member of the International Police Organization (INTERPOL), which is currently held by Umar.
Although Umar is set to retire from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) soon, his office as an Executive Member of the INTERPOL will continue until November 2024.
President Buhari noted that Umar had assisted Nigeria in many ways during his tenure as a member of the Executive Committee and expressed hope that he would continue to secure equipment for crimes, border management, and counter-terrorism for the country.
Umar’s new appointment takes effect from May 16, 2023, and his tenure at the INTERPOL ends in November 2024.
