Atiku Abubakar, Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is calling for the resignation of Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, over his poor conduct during the last presidential and national assembly elections.
At a meeting with resident electoral commissioners (RECs) in Abuja, Mahmood Yakubu admitted to various issues that jeopardized the outcome of the February 25th elections such as technology malfunctions, delays caused by election officials, and attitudes of political parties’ agents.
Despite promising that responsible officials would not be involved in upcoming gubernatorial elections and would face disciplinary actions, Atiku accused Mahmood Yakubu of being hypocritical and trying to shift blame instead of accepting responsibility for his role in irregularities during previous elections.
Atiku’s statement through his special assistant on public communication called for the INEC chairman to step down as an act of contrition rather than suspending any other staff who may have been involved.
