The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB) has issued a response to the Nigerian Army Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Faruk Yahaya.
NaijNaira understands that this is coming after the army chief accused the group and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) of posing a threat to Nigeria’s national security.
In a statement issued by IPoB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful on Wednesday night, the group urged the Army Chief to focus on more pressing matters such as rescuing Leah Sharibu and other students who were abducted by Boko Haram insurgents and taming the violent activities of herdsmen.
The pro-Biafra group also challenged Lt. Gen. Yahaya to provide evidence to support his claims that IPoB and ESN are a threat to Nigeria’s corporate existence.
They accused the Army Chief of playing to the gallery and suggested that Nigeria’s territorial borders with neighbouring countries are porous and vulnerable.
IPoB’s statement went on to say: “Instead of protecting Nigeria’s borders and tackling the activities of killer-herdsmen and Boko Haram insurgents, the Chief of Army Staff and his soldiers are busy hunting innocent IPoB and ESN operatives in the forests. We are fighting for our inalienable right, and we are not a threat to Nigeria. The Nigerian government and its security agencies are the ones who are threatening us.”
The group also criticized the Nigerian Army’s record on border security, stating that the country’s borders with Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Benin Republic are porous and vulnerable to infiltration.
