Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has shed light on President Bola Tinubu’s decision to appoint northerners into key positions in his government.
According to Ribadu, Tinubu made these strategic appointments to address the unique challenges faced by the northern region.
Speaking during a lecture titled “Navigating the Maze: Addressing Multi-dimensional Insecurity Challenges in Northern Nigeria,” Ribadu highlighted the poverty index and numerous challenges plaguing the north, including insecurity and a high number of out-of-school children.
Ribadu emphasized that Tinubu, during the formation of his government, expressed his deep concern for the north and his commitment to addressing its challenges.
This prompted him to appoint northerners to important offices, including security, defense, agriculture, education, health, and foreign affairs.
However, Ribadu urged northerners to put their differences aside and work together for the betterment of the region and Nigeria as a whole. He emphasized that Tinubu had given them an opportunity, and it was now their responsibility to make a positive impact.
Regarding security, Ribadu praised the achievements of the Tinubu government in less than a year. He highlighted the successful operations against bandit commanders and the rescue of kidnapped victims without paying any ransom. Ribadu also noted the significant reduction in cases of student abductions and the restoration of peace in the Niger Delta and the eastern region.
Ribadu attributed these successes to the government’s adoption of counterinsurgency strategies, which involve engaging with communities, providing humanitarian assistance, promoting reconciliation, and implementing deradicalization programs.
These efforts are part of the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on infrastructural development, job creation, education, healthcare provision, and poverty alleviation.
