A group of approximately one hundred members of the House of Representatives in Abuja recently protested against what they perceive as a discriminatory approach to seating arrangements and office allocations.

The lawmakers, many of whom are new members, expressed dissatisfaction with the seats assigned to them in a temporary chamber on the third floor, deeming them unsuitable.

They also raised concerns about the distribution of offices among members.

The seat allocation was overseen by the House Committee on Welfare, led by Rep. Olawale Raji.

In response to the protests, the Speaker of the House, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, called for calm and assured the members that the main chamber, currently undergoing renovation, would be ready before the House resumed its activities.

Rep. Khadijat Bukar-Ibrahim, Chairman of the Ad hoc Committee on Media, explained that all members had been assigned an office by the Welfare Committee.

Regarding the seating issue, she stated that due to the temporary nature of the seating area, there were not enough seats for all members to sit downstairs, so some had to be accommodated upstairs.

To resolve the issue, the Speaker directed members to occupy any available seat they find downstairs, a solution that was welcomed by all.
