The minority caucus in the Senate is gearing up for a confrontation with former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, who is allegedly attempting to install his preferred candidate as Senate Minority Leader.
According to reports, four political parties, including the PDP, NNPP, LP, and YPP, are prepared to resist Wike’s efforts.
These parties have pledged to ensure that Wike does not succeed in his latest move, which they claim is an attempt to destabilize the minority caucus and establish a one-party dictatorship system in the Senate.
The minority parties have vowed to select their leaders without interference from anti-democratic forces within or outside the Senate.
The PDP, in particular, is facing internal strife, with some members blaming Wike for the party’s poor showing in the February 25 presidential election.
Despite efforts by the acting National Chairman of the party, Umar Damagum, to reconcile the factions, anti-Wike forces within the PDP are reportedly blocking the process.
The statement reads in part: “Senators of the minority Parties would meet when the Senate reconvenes and, in consultation with our respective political parties, would select its leaders without undue interference from anti-democratic forces within or outside the Senate.”
