Serbia is threatening to withdraw from Euro 2024 following allegations of hateful chanting from Croatia and Albania supporters during their match in Hamburg.
Jovan Surbatovic, the General Secretary of the Football Association of Serbia, has lodged a formal complaint with UEFA, demanding sanctions against Croatia and Albania.
Surbatovic expressed outrage over the alleged chanting and warned that Serbia might exit the tournament if UEFA fails to take action.
In response to UEFA’s previous charge against Serbia for fans displaying a provocative banner and throwing objects during their match against England, Surbatovic defended Serbian supporters, claiming they behaved better than others despite isolated incidents.
He emphasized that one fan was punished for racist insults, which he insisted should not reflect on the majority of Serbian fans whom he described as gentlemen with open hearts.
The tensions escalated further with the Kosovo Football Federation’s complaint to UEFA about Serbian fans allegedly displaying political, chauvinistic, and racist messages during Serbia’s match against England.
This added fuel to Serbia’s frustration, with Surbatovic arguing that the punishment against Serbia was disproportionate compared to the alleged offenses by Croatian and Albanian supporters.
