Manchester United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has seen his net worth drop by $5.04bn (£3.9bn) over the past year, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index.
At 71, Ratcliffe’s fortune still stands at an impressive $16.1bn (£12.7bn), but the decline has moved him from 110th to 131st on the list of the world’s wealthiest individuals.
This drop is attributed to the performance of his petrochemicals company INEOS, as well as investments like his stake in Manchester United.
Acquiring a 27.7% stake in Manchester United for $1.2 billion at the beginning of 2024, Ratcliffe’s deal with the Glazer family has granted him oversight of footballing and strategic matters.
His wealth, primarily built through founding INEOS in 1998, is heavily tied to the industrial sector, which can be volatile, contributing to fluctuations in his net worth.
Despite this financial dip, Ratcliffe remains focused on the long-term future of both his business and United.
He has been vocal about his vision for a new Old Trafford, which he sees as key to ensuring the club can compete financially and competitively with the world’s biggest teams.
Ratcliffe has proposed funding part of the stadium project with taxpayer money, and INEOS is well-positioned to raise capital for such ventures if needed.
In addition to his business empire, Ratcliffe has expanded his sporting interests, including ownership of Ligue 1’s OGC Nice and sponsorship of teams in sailing and cycling.
