Afrobeats star Skales has stirred conversation with his recent take on crime rates in Nigeria versus the United Kingdom.
According to The Nation, Skales claimed during an appearance on the Just Vibes podcast that the fear of “jungle justice” plays a major role in keeping Nigeria’s crime rate lower than that of the UK.
He argued that the threat of street-level punishment serves as a powerful deterrent to would-be criminals in Nigeria.
“There is less crime in Nigeria because criminals know that if they get caught, jungle justice could be waiting for them,” Skales said.
He compared Nigeria’s often immediate and brutal responses to crime with the UK’s more structured and drawn-out legal process.
Skales suggested that the lengthy judicial procedures in the UK may actually embolden some offenders.
While discussing the topic, he made it clear that he does not support or encourage jungle justice in any form.
He emphasized the need for a fair and legal justice system, stating his respect for due process.
Beyond crime and justice, Skales also touched on the fluid nature of Afrobeats during the podcast.
He described the genre as an ever-evolving sound that blends multiple influences.
“No one can say exactly how Afrobeats is supposed to sound, Afrobeats has evolved,” he explained.
Skales expressed his admiration for the direction the genre is heading, especially with the contributions from the new generation of artists.
