South Africa has officially secured the commitment of promising defender Ime Okon, edging out Nigeria in the race for the talented 20-year-old. Okon recently impressed during a trial with Ukrainian side Dynamo Kyiv, according to report.
Born to a Nigerian father and South African mother, Okon had the option to represent either nation. Despite his Nigerian heritage, his life and football career have been rooted in South Africa, making his decision to join Bafana Bafana a natural step.
The young centre-back currently plays for Supersport United in the South African Premier Division. His calm performances this season earned him a spot in the league’s Team of the Week and caught the attention of national selectors.
Head coach Hugo Broos introduced Okon to the international stage on June 4 at the COSAFA Cup, where he made his debut in a narrow 1-0 loss to Mozambique. Despite the defeat, his composure and defensive awareness stood out. Okon quickly followed up with another impressive performance against Zimbabwe, where he scored his first international goal in a 2-0 victory.
“Okon has great potential and he proved it with his confidence and quality on the pitch,” coach Broos said.
Okon featured in every minute of the group stage, helping South Africa finish top after a goalless draw against Mauritius. His growing influence has positioned him as a key figure in the Bafana Bafana squad moving forward.
While his choice may have attracted attention in Nigeria, the Super Eagles are still well-equipped in defence. With experienced players like William Troost-Ekong and Fulham’s Calvin Bassey, alongside rising star Benjamin Fredrick, Nigeria’s defensive options remain strong.
Looking ahead, Ime Okon is now aiming to secure a place in South Africa’s squad for the World Cup qualifiers in September. One of the most anticipated fixtures will see Bafana Bafana face Nigeria on September 5 — a match that could see Okon line up against the country of his father’s birth.
The encounter promises to carry extra meaning for the young defender as he continues his journey with South Africa.
