Spotify has submitted a new update to its iPhone app, aiming to improve how users access audiobooks. The update, which is currently awaiting approval from Apple, will allow Premium subscribers to purchase audiobooks directly and add more hours to their audiobook listening. This move follows a federal court ruling against Apple, which demands changes to how the company handles in-app purchases and subscriptions.
According to CNET, this update is a response to Apple’s practices of blocking app developers from directing users to external purchasing links, which has been a major point of contention. The ruling in May 2025 could level the playing field by allowing developers to provide users with pricing information and direct them to external purchases without Apple’s usual fees.
“Spotify went on to say the app change will benefit not only users but publishers and authors as well,” the company shared in its blog post.
This change could make it easier for users to discover and buy audiobooks while offering authors and publishers more flexibility in how they sell their content. If approved, this update would significantly alter how Spotify handles audiobooks on the platform. Currently, the latest version of the app available, 9.0.40, includes changes like clearer subscription pricing and more payment options outside Apple’s system.
