The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) in Abuja has issued an interim order to halt Multi-Choice Nigeria Limited from increasing its tariffs and the cost of its products and services. The order comes in response to an ex-parte motion filed by Festus Onifade, counsel for the applicant, seeking to prevent the impending price increase scheduled to take effect from May 1.
The three-member tribunal, presided over by Saratu Shafii, granted the interim order and restrained Multi-Choice from proceeding with the price increase until the motion on notice is heard and determined. The ruling is aimed at protecting the rights of the claimant and other consumers.
Onifade, in the suit filed on April 29, also sought an order to prevent Multi-Choice from taking any steps that may negatively affect the rights of the claimant and other consumers. The lawsuit was brought against Multi-Choice Nigeria Ltd and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
The CCPT’s decision to halt the price increase is a significant development for subscribers of DStv and GOtv packages. It provides temporary relief and ensures that consumers are not subjected to higher costs until the motion on notice is resolved.
