Super Eagles goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, has confirmed that he will be returning to his South African club, Chippa United, despite the threats against him.
Nwabali became a target of hate in South Africa after his heroic performance in the 2023 AFCON semi-final clash between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Bafana Bafana.
During the match, Nwabali saved two penalties, helping the Super Eagles secure a 4-2 victory on penalties and ending Bafana Bafana’s dream of winning their second AFCON title.
Although Nigeria went on to lose in the final to Ivory Coast, Nwabali’s outstanding performance earned him both praise and threats from South African football enthusiasts.
Reports suggest that some individuals have been threatening to harm the goalkeeper if he returns to Chippa United.
Former CAF Appeal Committee vice president, Mazi Amanze Uchegbulam, has also warned Nwabali against going back to South Africa.
However, the 27-year-old goalkeeper remains undeterred. In response to the threats, Nwabali emphasized that football is just a game that produces winners and losers.
He dismissed the notion of attaching any significance to the threats, stating that it was merely someone expressing their frustration on social media.
Despite the warnings and concerns, Nwabali has had discussions with his club chairman, who did not mention anything about the threats.
