Sudan's Warring Parties to Meet in Saudi Arabia for Peace Talks

Sudan’s ongoing conflict has led to hundreds of deaths and forced tens of thousands of refugees to flee abroad.

In an effort to end the fighting and promote peace, Saudi Arabia and the United States have organized pre-negotiation talks between the Sudanese army and its rival, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), in the city of Jeddah.

The talks have been welcomed by Sudan’s Forces of Freedom and Change, a political group leading the transition to civilian rule.

The conflict began in April 2021 following the collapse of an internationally-backed plan for a new transition with civilian parties.

Despite multiple ceasefire declarations, the fighting has continued.

The Jeddah talks are the first serious attempt to end the conflict and promote political stability in Sudan.

Saudi Arabia, which shares the Red Sea with Sudan, has close ties to both sides and is focused on security in the region.

The United States and other countries are also working to address the crisis and promote human rights in Sudan.
