Fubara thanks Tinubu, Rivers political crisis, Tinubu Fubara peace deal

Suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has appealed to Nigerians and the people of Rivers to express appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for intervening in the state’s ongoing political unrest.

According to Leadership, Fubara made this appeal during a stakeholders’ meeting with members of the “Simplified Movement” in Port Harcourt on Thursday, May 29. The embattled governor described Tinubu’s actions as timely and wise amid tensions that could have spiraled into chaos.

“I don’t know how he gets his information, but the truth is that he acted with wisdom at the right time. He is the one you should thank,” Fubara said during the meeting.

The suspended governor noted that the reconciliation process initiated by the presidency is already in motion. He expressed confidence that both the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers State would be restored soon.

Fubara encouraged his supporters to accept the peace deal and remain calm. He added that cooperation from all parties is essential for returning governance to normal and maintaining stability across the state.

While reiterating his gratitude, Fubara offered what appeared to be a public apology, calling on supporters to show appreciation and patience. He emphasized that his temporary removal from office would not hinder efforts to restore democratic processes.

The Rivers political crisis erupted following a fallout between Fubara and his political mentor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Just months after Fubara took office, disagreements escalated, prompting the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers.

President Tinubu subsequently suspended the governor and appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as the state’s sole administrator. The decision, however, has drawn criticism from opposition parties, who argue that such a move lacks constitutional backing.

Despite the controversy, Fubara continues to maintain a conciliatory tone. He assured his followers that he would return to office soon, stating that dialogue and diplomacy are key to lasting peace in the oil-rich state.
