Rumors about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 suggest developers may be able to release full games on 64GB Game Cards, a potential leap forward from the 32GB maximum used on the original console.

According to a report by GameZone based on leaked data from a breach at Arc System Works, new codes indicate third-party publishers were given options for physical releases. These include labels like [DL] for digital downloads, [64GB] for full physical releases, and [POTION], which may refer to a new kind of Game-Key Card.

While these findings haven’t been verified, one quote stands out:
“CD Projekt RED revealed that the maximum capacity they could use for Cyberpunk 2077 was 64 GB.”
Unlike the rest of the data, this statement was confirmed directly by the developers and is not part of the leak.

Historically, Nintendo Game Cards have been limited in capacity. The Witcher 3, for example, was fit onto a 32GB card with all its content. Larger games often required downloads or were released as part-code, part-physical bundles. That practice frustrated players who prefer complete physical editions.

There’s growing concern that physical media isn’t keeping up with ballooning game file sizes. Meanwhile, digital distribution continues to dominate, especially with faster SSDs enabling quicker load times and performance. This shift is driven by cost efficiency and storage logistics, not just publisher preference.

Larger Game Cards may technically be possible but are expensive to produce. Until mass adoption makes them more cost-effective, digital releases are expected to remain the norm.

As the industry changes, many players are now focusing less on packaging and more on long-term access—calling for better digital rights and the ability to redownload or back up their games. For now, full physical games are becoming rarer, regardless of fan demand.
