Nyesom Wike and Siminalayi Fubara say their bitter rift is finally over after President Bola Tinubu brokered a fresh peace deal in Abuja, NaijNaira can report.
The late-night meeting, reported by Premium Times, saw both political rivals speak calmly as they confirmed the end of their feud in front of lawmakers.
“We’ve all agreed to work with the governor, and the governor has agreed to work with all of us,” Wike told reporters after the meeting.
Fubara echoed the sentiment, saying, “What we need for the progress of Rivers State is peace, and tonight, peace has returned.”
President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers earlier this year after his 2023 peace initiative collapsed.
He had suspended Fubara, his deputy, and the entire state assembly amid the turmoil.
The feud started barely six months into Fubara’s tenure, tearing the assembly into two rival factions.
A Supreme Court ruling later gave the pro-Wike faction legal control of the assembly and nullified local elections under Fubara’s watch.
As impeachment threats loomed, Tinubu stepped in again, suspending all key players and naming a sole administrator for the state.
Despite the chaos, Fubara promised the latest truce would hold.
“We’ll do everything within our power to make sure we sustain it,” he vowed.
Details of the peace agreement remain unknown, and it’s unclear whether Tinubu’s suspension of elected officials will be reversed anytime soon.
Public reaction to the emergency rule and the sidelining of elected leaders remains heated, with many Nigerians calling it undemocratic.
