President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri in Borno State to Muhammadu Buhari University in memory of the late former president, NaijNaira can report.
Bayo Onanuga, the president’s media adviser, confirmed the decision in a post on his verified X account on Thursday, citing that it was announced during the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja.
The council’s session was part of broader tributes to Buhari, who died in London on July 13, 2025, after a long illness.
President Tinubu described Buhari as “pious without show, just without cruelty, humane without sentimentality.”
He also added: “His life was a rebuke to vice and a refuge for virtue. The purity of his private character gave radiance to the discipline and integrity of his public service.”
In line with national mourning protocols, flags have been ordered to fly at half-mast from July 13 through July 19.
The Federal Government had also declared Tuesday, July 15, as a public holiday in his honor.
Buhari was buried in Daura, Katsina State, after four decades of public life.
His political journey included military rule in the 1980s and a return as an elected president in 2015 and 2019.
He left office in 2023 after completing his second term, handing power to Tinubu.
