Tom Cruise took a moment to honor his late Top Gun co-star, Val Kilmer, during his appearance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this week. The tribute came ahead of a new Mission: Impossible trailer reveal.
“I’d like to honour a dear friend of mine, Val Kilmer,” Cruise said, paying his respects to the actor.
According to RTÉ, Kilmer, who was 65, passed away after battling pneumonia. His death came just one week after the announcement, following years of struggling with throat cancer, diagnosed in 2014.
The actor’s final appearance was in Top Gun: Maverick, where his health struggles were incorporated into his role as Iceman, a character he first portrayed in the original 1986 film. His portrayal was a poignant nod to the real-life challenges he faced.
Cruise led the audience at Caesars Palace in a silent tribute, asking them to “take a moment and just think about all the wonderful times that we had” watching Kilmer on screen.
He added, “I wish you well on your next journey,” as a heartfelt message to his friend.
In addition to the tribute, Cruise also shared exciting new footage from Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The trailer, which teases daring stunts and callbacks to the franchise’s iconic moments, promises an action-packed conclusion to the long-running series.
The film is set for release on May 23, with Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt declaring, “I need you to trust me one last time.”
