Abdulrasheed Bawa, the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), was suspended indefinitely by President Bola Tinubu over “weighty allegations” of abuse of office against him.
Although the specific allegations were not mentioned in the statement announcing his suspension, it was reported that Bawa’s alleged role in the naira design policy was one of the reasons for his undoing.
Tinubu and those around him were reportedly angered by Bawa’s involvement in the controversial policy, which caused chaos nationwide and hindered Tinubu’s chances of winning the presidential election.
Additionally, Bawa’s recent allegation of demanding a $2 million bribe from former Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara state was another reason for his suspension.
Bawa is currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) where he is being questioned.
Mohammed Umar Abba has been appointed as the acting chairman of the EFCC following Bawa’s suspension.
