The Amalgamated Union of App-based Transport Workers of Nigeria has submitted a petition to the Federal Ministry of Labour, the Nigerian Bar Association, and the Nigeria Labour Congress seeking intervention over the refusal of e-hailing firms to increase driver pay.
The union’s Publicity Chairman, Jossy Olawale, expressed disappointment that the app-based companies had not taken action to address drivers’ concerns despite a seven-day ultimatum.
The union has suspended its planned indefinite strike to allow for dialogue, but the ultimatum will expire on June 20, and the union fears that an agreement may not be reached.
Olawale called on relevant stakeholders to facilitate dialogue towards a resolution and urged app-based companies to restore the accounts of members unjustifiably blocked during last week’s nationwide strike.
Uber’s Country Manager in Nigeria, Tope Akinwumi, said fare increases must be balanced to avoid discouraging riders.
