A rocket landed close to the United Nations mission compound in Janzour, outside Tripoli, as UN envoy Hanna Tetteh addressed the Security Council – www.naijnaira.com reports.
According to the UN, the compound was not struck directly, and no casualties were recorded in Thursday night’s incident.
Libya’s Interior Ministry said the attack was carried out with a Russian-made SPG rocket, which hit a civilian residence nearby without causing deaths.
Officials confirmed that security forces later discovered a vehicle carrying additional rockets along with the launcher.
The Government of National Unity in Tripoli has launched an investigation to identify those responsible for the attempted strike.
The attack happened at the same moment Tetteh was briefing the Security Council, where she outlined a plan to build a unified government capable of holding fair elections.
“We are convinced that the political process should focus on guaranteeing general elections and the unification of institutions through a sequenced approach,” she told the Council.
Libya has struggled with instability since the fall of Moammar Gaddafi in 2011, leaving the country split between rival administrations in the east and west.
