President Bola Tinubu’s announcement to rename the University of Maiduguri after late former President Muhammadu Buhari has triggered widespread backlash, NaijNaira can report.
The move was disclosed during a recent Federal Executive Council meeting.
While some see it as a tribute, many others—including former students, civil groups, and legal experts—are rejecting the decision. Critics argue that the university’s legacy and identity risk being erased without proper consultation.
Education Minister Maruf Alausa claimed the change honours Buhari’s commitment to education and regional security.
But the petition opposing the renaming has gained traction, drawing over 8,800 signatures by Saturday afternoon.
“The University of Maiduguri is more than just a name,” the petition reads. “It symbolizes resilience, pride, and academic strength for the people of the North-East.”
Legal analyst Maxwell Opara stated, “The president cannot change the name without the National Assembly. Due process is mandatory.”
Opposition voices suggest renaming institutions in Buhari’s hometown or military-affiliated schools instead.
This is not the first time such attempts have met resistance, as similar efforts under past administrations also faced strong pushback.
As of now, Tinubu has yet to respond, and the National Assembly remains silent on the legal validity of the name change.
