Genk striker and Bayern Munich target Tolu Arokodare has responded to critics following Nigeria’s Unity Cup victory against Jamaica, a match that ended in dramatic fashion. The Super Eagles edged the Reggae Boyz 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regular time.
Arokodare, who converted his spot kick during the shootout, posted a bold message on social media, aiming at those who dismissed the Unity Cup as irrelevant.
“Say I no go win anything this season. If you like, make una call am backyard tournament. Cup nah cup,” he wrote.
The 24-year-old forward came off the bench and made an impact in what many described as a morale-boosting win for Nigeria’s national team. After a tough season in Belgium with Genk, where silverware was elusive, Arokodare embraced the moment in national colours.
Before defeating Jamaica, Nigeria had beaten Ghana in the Unity Cup’s opening match — dubbed the “Jollof Derby” — giving new coach Eric Chelle an encouraging start. The back-to-back victories added weight to a tournament some fans and analysts had previously downplayed.
For Arokodare, whose name has been linked with a possible move to Bayern Munich, the Unity Cup title may not carry major prestige, but it offered him a chance to silence doubters and celebrate with pride.
