An Islamic cleric in Nigeria has sparked controversy after calling for the death of the country’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, due to her affiliation with the church.
The cleric’s comments were captured in a viral video where he criticized the Muslim/Muslim ticket that secured President Bola Tinubu’s election victory, labeling it as fraudulent.
He went on to controversially state that Oluremi Tinubu should be condemned to death for her role as a pastor.
The unidentified cleric, speaking in the Hausa language, claimed that Oluremi Tinubu, being a Christian, was an infidel and a leader among the infidels.
He argued that according to Quranic law, she should be executed. However, he failed to cite any relevant Quranic passages to support his claims.
In response to the cleric’s remarks, the Bauchi State Police Command has declared another Islamic cleric, Idris Abdulazeez Dutsen Tanshi, wanted for alleged contempt of court.
Dutsen Tanshi has been on trial since 2022 for alleged blasphemous remarks and other charges, including inciting public disturbance and insulting religious creed.
The police have urged the public to assist in arresting Dutsen Tanshi, offering a handsome reward for anyone who provides information about his whereabouts. The command has provided contact details for reporting any sightings or information related to the wanted cleric.
It is crucial for religious leaders and communities to promote tolerance, respect, and peaceful coexistence among different faiths, rather than inciting hatred and violence.
