What Are the Early Warning Signs of Oral, Tongue, and Mouth Cancers

Keeping an eye out for warning signs of medical issues, such as cancer, is just as important for maintaining good oral health.

Leukoplakia, which is when white patches appear on the tongue that won’t disappear, could be an indicator of pre-cancerous or even cancerous cells.

This condition is often caused by long-term exposure to irritants such as smoking and it’s important to visit a dentist or doctor if you spot this symptom in your mouth.

Recent figures revealed that rates of mouth cancer in the UK have hit a record high with 8,864 cases being diagnosed last year – a 34% increase compared to ten years prior.

Cases have doubled over the past generation and experts are urging people to become aware of oral cancer symptoms.

Some key signs to look out for include mouth ulcers that do not heal within three weeks, white or red patches in the mouth, lumps or swellings within the head, neck, or mouth area, and any hoarseness in your voice; all of which should be discussed with a doctor if they persist.
