The Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors recently expressed concern over the unstable power supply in the country, stating that Nigeria needs to generate around 33,000 Megawatts to ensure stable electricity.
The Executive Director of Research and Advocacy, Mr Sunday Oduntan, made this statement at a workshop in Yola, organized in collaboration with the MacArthur Foundation.
He noted that Nigeria has a population of 210 million, with only 32 million households connected to the grid, resulting in a heavy deficit.
The rule of thumb for uninterrupted electricity is 1,000MW per one million population, meaning Nigeria needs to generate 32,000MW to ensure stable electricity supply to every household connected to the grid.
However, the country currently produces only 4,000MW, and what the DisCos collect has never been up to the energy sent out.
Oduntan called for increased investment in the power sector to address the problem of cost recovery and profitability of investment on the part of DisCos.
