Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), a northern Nigeria-based group, has called out the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to take responsibility for the safety of Nigerian citizens in Sudan, especially students.
The group threatened to hold Buhari’s government accountable if any northerner is killed in the Sudanese war.
In a statement released on Saturday, Yerima Shettima, the national president of AYCF, expressed concern about the safety of thousands of Nigerians in Sudan, who have not been evacuated despite the Sudanese government’s call for the evacuation of citizens within three days.
The group stated that it is unacceptable to leave the students and other Nigerians in the country where the war has escalated with the use of heavy-duty incendiary.
“It is abundantly clear that lives are now at stake, especially for our Northern brothers and sisters schooling in Sudan,” the statement reads.
Furthermore, AYCF emphasized that the Nigerian embassy in Sudan would be held accountable if any Nigerian is killed in the country.
They reminded the Buhari-led government that it is responsible for the protection of Nigerian citizens anywhere they are on the planet.
The group’s statement is coming amidst reports of a military coup in Sudan that has left the country in political and social turmoil.
The crisis has led to the displacement of many Sudanese citizens and the closure of the country’s airspace.
