Chrisland School Limited and four of its staff members, Ademoye Adewale, Kuku Fatai, Belinda Amao, and Nwatu Victoria, are facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, reckless and negligent acts in connection with the death of 12-year-old student Whitney Adeniran during the school’s inter-house sports activities in February.
The Lagos State Government filed the charges, which carry a penalty of life imprisonment and two-year jail terms, on behalf of the state.
The charges allege that the defendants acted in a reckless and negligent manner that endangered human life and did not ensure Whitney’s safety during the event.
The case will be heard before Justice Oyindamola Ogala of the Lagos High Court, Ikeja.
Whitney’s cause of death was determined to be asphyxia and electrocution, according to a 9-page autopsy report conducted at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
The legal team of the Lagos State Government will be led by the Director of Public Prosecution, Dr Babajide Martins, while the defense team is made up of four senior advocates of Nigeria.
Whitney was buried in Lagos on March 2, 2023.
