The World Health Organization (WHO) has lifted the global health emergency status for Mpox, previously known as monkeypox.
The WHO reported that cases of Mpox peaked in July and August 2022 and have since been declining.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that there have been almost 90% fewer cases in the last three months than in the previous three months, with over 87,000 cases and 140 deaths reported from 111 countries.
Ghebreyesus declared that Mpox is no longer a global health emergency, citing steady progress in controlling the outbreak.
However, WHO warned that the fight against the virus is not over, and it continues to pose significant health challenges.
The emergency committee for Mpox recommended that the multi-country outbreak of the virus no longer represents a public health emergency of international concern.
Ghebreyesus expressed gratitude that the feared backlash on affected communities has largely not materialized.
Mpox was first declared a global health emergency in July 2022 and is characterized by welts forming on the recipient’s skin.
