The head of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has warned that the world should be prepared for a disease even deadlier than Covid.
Speaking at the World Health Assembly forum, Dr. Tedros emphasized that the threat of another public health crisis cannot be ignored.
He also cautioned that despite the pandemic’s darkest days being over, a new Covid variant with the potential to send the world back to square one could still emerge.
Dr. Tedros unveiled a new global scheme to identify and track the most dangerous pathogens at the annual meeting of the WHO’s 194 member states.
While no specific diseases were named, the UN agency’s list of pressing threats includes ‘Disease X,’ a placeholder for a devastating pathogen not yet discovered.
The WHO had earlier this month declared that Covid was no longer a public health emergency of international concern, but an established and ongoing health issue.
