Chelsea’s signing of Mykhaylo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk for an undisclosed fee will likely prove a significant stumbling block for six current Chelsea players and three exits may be imminent.
The 22-year-old Ukrainian winger had been courting the interest of Arsenal prior to the Blues’ eleventh-hour bidding, with reports suggesting they had submitted at least three bids.
With his eight-and-a-half-year contract now signed, however, Mudryk will be vying for a spot among various rising stars in west London, such as Raheem Sterling.
Signed last summer from Man City in a £50million deal, Sterling has yet to break out and prove his worth – something that could lead to an early exit even if not with this latest signing itself.
Meanwhile, Callum Hudson-Odoi might struggle to break through given the presence of a new star, while any possible move for PSV’s Noni Madueke could also be thrown into doubt as he’d serve no purpose with Mudryk on board.
This news won’t come as encouraging words to either Hakim Ziyech or Christian Pulisic either – both yet to live up to their billing – nor Crystal Palace loanee Conor Gallagher who is likely viewed as expendable should the club choose to cash out and make room for fresh talent.
