Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has criticized the media for taking parts of his interview with Channels TV out of context and slicing them into new ones.
In a statement titled “Media Responsibility,” Soyinka expressed his concern about the critical responsibility of the media in transmitting spoken words to the public, especially in times of civic uncertainty.
He denounced the media’s prejudicial selectivity and betrayal of trust, saying that when remarks are taken out of context and spliced into a new one, distortions become stamped on public receptivity, and the central intent of one’s remarks becomes completely unrecognizable.
Soyinka emphasized that his rejection of fascism is nothing new, and he hopes that Channels TV will provide the entire interview.
He also expressed his concern about the alleged complaint of people not following “instructions” and urged the media to play by the rules of mutual obligation or abandon public discourse altogether.
