Top opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, and Aminu Tambuwal, met in Abuja on Monday to finalize plans for a new coalition ahead of 2027, NaijNaira can report.
The Daily Sun revealed the meeting was centered around plans to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the new platform for the coming elections.
Also at the meeting were former governors Liyel Imoke, Babangida Aliyu, Gabriel Suswam, and Sam Egwu.
They were joined by Sule Lamido, Tom Ikimi, Waziri Maina, Senators Abdul Ningi and Tunde Ogbeha—key figures pushing for an alternative to the current PDP structure.
After four hours behind closed doors, the group released a joint communique stating the PDP had become a shadow of its former self.
They blamed internal power struggles, what they described as APC’s use of state institutions, and weak leadership for the party’s decline.
“Since our loss in the last presidential election and the exit of Dr. Iyorchia Ayu as National Chairman, our dear party has never been the same again,” they said.
They accused the APC government of blackmail, threats, and patronage to weaken PDP loyalty across the country.
According to them, PDP members are defecting due to fear and political pressure, especially in states like Delta and Akwa Ibom.
Atiku and his allies now want a stronger platform, one they believe can confront the APC more effectively by 2027.
They urged all frustrated PDP members and patriotic Nigerians to rally behind the coalition for a united opposition front.
Despite the PDP governors’ rejection of any coalition, internal tensions, leadership disputes, and defections continue to plague the party.
A party NEC member at the meeting claimed PDP no longer offers a viable path to victory and said they would press ahead with the ADC plan regardless.
“You are aware that some of our leaders are publicly canvassing support for the APC,” he said. “Those of us here will work for the coalition.”
He added that anyone still hoping to contest under PDP in 2027 is free to “go and waste his money.”
