The Nigerian Army has deepened its collaboration with the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) to address the growing threat of illegal arms circulation in the country — www.naijnaira.com reports.
During a visit to the Army Headquarters in Maiduguri, the Northeast Zonal Coordinator of NCCSALW, Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Adamu (rtd), met with Brig.-Gen. U.V. Unachukwu, the General Officer Commanding 7 Division, The Guardian reports.
Adamu stressed that the uncontrolled spread of small arms and light weapons threatens peace and stability in Nigeria.
He assured that the centre will continue to share intelligence with the Army to prevent weapons from getting into the wrong hands.
“Intelligence sharing is paramount in preventing the proliferation of arms,” Adamu said.
He added that cooperation with the military is key in recovering and destroying illegal weapons across the region.
Brig.-Gen. Unachukwu pledged the Army’s full support, describing Adamu as a seasoned officer with proven results.
He praised NCCSALW for working closely with security agencies, traditional leaders, and stakeholders in the Northeast.
According to him, such joint efforts will accelerate the mop-up of dangerous arms in communities.
Security experts believe this strengthened partnership could help curb violence linked to the circulation of illicit weapons.
