LaLiga has expressed disapproval at the astronomical sums spent by English Premier League teams during the January transfer window.
According to Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, a record £815m (1 billion dollars) was spent in this time, with 37% of that, a British-record £106.8m being spent on Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Benfica.
In comparison, all clubs from Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1 combined only accounted for roughly the same amount.
LaLiga president Javier Tebas has shared a video on Twitter of corporate general director Javier Gomez expressing his views on the matter.
He said that “we are aware there is a lot of talk about how La Liga’s economic control means Spanish clubs sign less than Premier League Club”, and that “the opposite is true in the Premier League”.
Explaining further he revealed how up until June 30th 2021 total losses between both tiers within England amounted to €3bn while in Spain it was just €250m – despite shareholders injecting more money into PL Clubs (£3.5bn) compared to Clubs in Spain (€450 million).
Gomez rounded off with the statement that clubs should be punished if they do not comply with financial regulations put forward by UEFA, no matter what league or country they represent.
The data examined through Deloitte’s report also showed expenditure for January 2022 and an estimation for the whole season which confirmed that overall Big Five League clubs were outspent almost four times over.
