Taiwo Awoniyi says he feels no pressure to outshine fellow Super Eagles forwards Victor Osimhen and Victor Boniface ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
According to Soccernet.ng, the Nottingham Forest striker addressed speculation around competition for Nigeria’s attacking positions, emphasizing that selection isn’t about knocking others out but being ready when the moment comes.
“If it’s your moment, it’s your moment. In all fairness to all these big names you’ve mentioned, I believe if it’s my moment, many of them will watch me playing as well.”
Awoniyi last featured for Nigeria during a 1–0 win over Libya in Uyo in 2024. Though absent from the current year’s matches, he remains calm about his chances. Speaking on the Humble Boots podcast, he explained that his priority is improving himself as a player, not trying to outdo teammates.
The 27-year-old said he doesn’t believe making the squad is something within any player’s control. Instead, it comes down to form, fitness, and being ready when called upon. He added that his focus is on getting better, regardless of who else is in the squad.
Awoniyi, who has scored twice in 10 appearances for the Super Eagles, is among the pool of forwards hoping for selection as Nigeria prepares for a four-nation tournament in Brentford. Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica are also taking part in the event, which serves as a buildup to AFCON 2025.
While he continues his season with Nottingham Forest, Awoniyi remains clear on his mindset — stay prepared, stay grounded, and let the football speak for itself.
