Starting June 13, Google Wallet users in the United States will no longer be able to make payments using PayPal. This change comes as the platform phases out support for PayPal accounts within the app.
According to Android Authority, Google confirmed the change on a now-deleted support page. The post stated that all PayPal accounts currently linked to Google Wallet will be automatically removed, and users will lose access to their PayPal transaction history within the Wallet app.
The decision marks a significant shift for users who’ve relied on Google Wallet for everyday transactions. Notably, Google had already stopped allowing new PayPal links for US users back in April, a move that hinted at this broader change.
Card Linking Required to Continue Using Wallet
After June 13, users will need to link a credit or debit card to their Google account to keep using Google Wallet. This step is required for both one-time purchases and recurring payments. Without an updated payment method, affected users may experience disruptions with subscriptions and other transactions.
While PayPal accounts will no longer work, Google Wallet will still support PayPal-branded debit cards. Additionally, PayPal will remain available as a payment option for users in Germany.
PayPal Transactions No Longer Viewable in Wallet
Another important update is the loss of transaction history. Once PayPal is removed, users won’t be able to view past PayPal transactions within Google Wallet. To access this data, they’ll need to log into their PayPal account via the official app or website.
“We encourage users to add a valid card to avoid payment failures after June 13,” Google advised in the now-deleted support page.
Why Is PayPal Being Removed from Google Wallet?
While Google hasn’t offered an official explanation for the decision, reports suggest PayPal may be steering away from third-party integrations. The company is reportedly focusing on driving users to its own app and services.
By doing so, PayPal could maintain greater control over transaction data and reduce third-party processing fees. The change may be part of a larger effort to position the PayPal app for payments as a more standalone option for consumers.
PayPal first introduced support for Google Wallet—then known as Android Pay—in 2017. The move had made the platform more versatile for Android users and helped online businesses process payments more efficiently.
Now, with the Google Wallet PayPal removal, users and merchants alike will need to shift their payment preferences quickly to avoid service interruptions.
