The wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appears far from over. Fresh speculation is building around Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who may be considering a move to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Their possible defection comes after recent shifts by the Delta and Akwa Ibom governors.

According to Leadership News, PDP’s acting national chairman, Ambassador Illiya Umar Damagum, has denied rumours that he plans to leave the party for the APC. He described the claims as a deliberate attempt by unnamed groups to discredit his leadership.

While Diri and Fubara’s next moves remain unclear, six federal lawmakers from Bayelsa and Rivers States have reportedly turned down invitations to join the ruling party. Among them are Senator Henry Seriake Dickson and Hon Fred Agbedi, who are said to have refused to defect.

Damagum addressed the claims directly, saying, “The smear campaign is being orchestrated by internal saboteurs who, failing to impose impunity and personal agendas, falsely accuse Ambassador Damagum of standing in their way.”

Sources revealed that Diri has been in discussions with influential leaders and may already have the support of Bayelsa’s State Assembly members. However, resistance from his former allies in the National Assembly is proving to be a major challenge.

In Rivers State, Fubara’s administration, through Commissioner Warisenibo Joe Johnson, denied reports that the governor has approached lawmakers to join the APC.

The PDP continues to face internal struggles as efforts to rebuild and strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 elections intensify.
