The HDMI Forum has officially dropped HDMI 2.2, and it’s changing the game for anyone serious about high-resolution displays and lightning-fast refresh rates, NaijNaira can report.
As reported by T3, the HDMI 2.2 spec pushes bandwidth to a massive 96Gbps—double what HDMI 2.1b offered. That opens the door for 16K resolution, 12K at 120Hz, 8K at 240Hz, and 4K at a wild 480Hz.
“Gamers are going to love this upgrade,” one developer said during a private press preview at CES 2025.
You won’t need to swap your HDMI ports—they’ll look the same—but you’ll definitely need new certified Ultra96 cables to hit those speeds. Look for those to roll out later in 2025, with wider adoption expected into 2026.
HDMI 2.2 also includes something called Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), which automatically adjusts for lip-sync issues. That’s going to be a big deal for VR headsets and high-end TVs.
While most content today sticks to 4K, this tech is clearly prepping us for the next level. If you want 480Hz performance or want to try 16K one day, HDMI 2.2 is the future.
“With HDMI 2.2, we’re ready for whatever content creators throw at us next,” an HDMI Licensing rep said.
Don’t expect to see HDMI 2.2 on shelves tomorrow, but once Nvidia, AMD, and TV manufacturers catch up, you’ll want to be ready.
Get your wallet ready—this isn’t just a cable; it’s a leap into the next era of gaming and entertainment.
