Ceasefire talks over the Gaza conflict have taken a sharp turn in Cairo, as former US President Donald Trump claimed a deal could be just days away, NaijNaira can report.

As reported by The National, Trump’s comments came during a White House event Friday, where he said, “We think within the next week, we’re going to get a ceasefire,” referring to discussions aimed at ending the 20-month war between Israel and Hamas.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari called it a “window of opportunity” and warned it could close quickly if not seized.

“The pressure from the US has shown what’s possible,” he added, pointing to the January truce that briefly paused the violence.

US envoy Bishara Bahbah has been locked in intense talks with Egyptian officials and senior Hamas representatives since Monday. While Israel has yet to send its top negotiators, Mossad and military representatives are expected in Cairo soon.

Sources involved say the current round is focused on modifying past proposals to lock in a 60-day truce. This would include a full Israeli withdrawal and the formation of a Palestinian technocratic commission to manage Gaza.

Israel, however, refuses to commit to anything beyond a temporary pause and demands Hamas’s complete disarmament. Hamas, still holding about 50 hostages, shows flexibility but rejects permanent disarmament and seeks guarantees of safety for exiled leaders.

The war erupted after Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 Israelis and kidnapped 250. In retaliation, Israel’s campaign has killed over 56,000 Palestinians, displaced millions, and left Gaza in ruins.
