The fate of President Emmanuel Macron’s plan to raise the retirement age in France now rests in the hands of the country’s Constitutional Council.
If the council approves the reform, the bill can be implemented, but if it rejects it, the plan will be scrapped.
Macron has expressed his desire for the pension reform to be implemented by the end of the year, but unions have vowed to continue their strikes and protests until the plan is withdrawn.
Despite a decrease in the number of protesters, unions still managed to mobilize sizable crowds, with 380,000 people taking part in protests across France on Thursday.
The demonstrations were largely peaceful, but dozens of injuries were reported among police and protesters.
The council’s decision is expected to be announced around 6:00 pm local time.
In the meantime, Macron has met with Senegalese soldiers and visited the construction site of Notre Dame de Paris, while unions have planned scattered demonstrations in hopes of pressuring the council to strike down the plan.
