The African Democratic Congress is wrestling with doubts as key figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi continue to delay formal membership ahead of 2027 — www.naijnaira.com reports.

According to Sunday Punch, sources within the coalition admit the hesitation of both leaders has slowed momentum and unsettled supporters.

Atiku, who left the Peoples Democratic Party weeks ago, has yet to officially register with the ADC, while Obi also holds back from taking the step despite Labour Party struggles.

Party members say this delay discourages potential supporters, as many expected the two politicians to give the ADC the push it needs.

One insider said, “Since he left the PDP, Atiku has been partyless, and he has also refused to join the ADC. Peter Obi has also refused to join. As this continues, a lot of Nigerians are not even encouraged to also join the party.”

The ADC launched in March as the adopted coalition platform of opposition figures, naming Senator David Mark as interim chairman and Rauf Aregbesola as secretary.

However, INEC’s failure to fully recognise Mark’s leadership and ongoing court disputes have complicated the party’s growth.

Party spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi insisted there is no panic, stressing, “We are not disturbed over Atiku and Obi’s delayed membership. Nothing has changed; both of them are very much with the coalition.”

Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, confirmed his principal’s commitment, saying registration is “a process that is ongoing.”

With 2027 approaching, ADC leaders believe the party remains the strongest alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s APC, but many agree its strength hinges on these heavyweight defections.
