Nottingham Forest has officially parted ways with head coach Nuno Espirito Santo after almost two years at the helm – www.naijnaira.com reports.
The Portuguese manager took charge of a struggling Forest side in December 2023, inheriting a team fighting relegation.
Under Nuno, Nottingham Forest climbed to European qualification last season, a feat they hadn’t achieved in nearly three decades, Soccernet.ng notes.
Despite this success, tensions grew between Nuno and club owner Evangelos Marinakis, straining their professional relationship.
“This season, not so well, but I always believe we can dialogue, and what we say is always valid because my concern is the squad and the season that we have ahead of us,” Nuno admitted.
The former Wolves coach added that the relationship “is not so close, it’s not on a daily basis, so it’s not good. What it used to be was a good, respectful relationship.”
Nottingham Forest confirmed the decision on their official platforms, expressing gratitude for Nuno’s contributions during his tenure.
A rift reportedly worsened after Edu, the ex-Arsenal Director, was appointed Forest’s global head of football in July, affecting Nuno’s influence over transfers.
The club spent over £190m this summer on players including Omari Hutchinson, Arnaud Kalimuendo, and James McAtee, while Nuno’s authority over signings became limited.
When Nuno joined, Forest were 17th in the Premier League, a position they maintained after overcoming a four-point deduction for a PSR breach in April 2024.
Despite challenges, the team ended the following season with 65 points, narrowly missing Champions League qualification and returning to European football via the UEFA Europa League.
Names such as Ange Postecoglou, Marco Silva, and Jose Mourinho have been considered as potential replacements, with Forest exploring options during the international break.
