Air Peace has suspended all domestic flights across Nigeria, citing safety concerns amid an ongoing strike by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). The airline made the announcement on Wednesday, stating that without critical weather reports, flight operations cannot continue safely.
According to a report published by Kelvin Felix on April 23, 2025, NiMet workers have gone on strike over unpaid salaries, disrupting the issuance of essential weather updates. Among these is the Current Nowcast of Hazardous Weather (CNH), vital for safe aircraft landings during the rainy season.
Air Peace emphasized its commitment to safety, stating that without real-time data from NiMet, particularly during thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, it cannot guarantee the well-being of its passengers or crew. The airline noted that the CNH reports are a non-negotiable component of flight planning and landing protocols.
“As a safety-first airline, we have chosen to act responsibly by suspending operations until NiMet resumes full service,” the company stated in its official release. Passengers have been assured that information regarding bookings and rescheduling will be communicated directly.
There are growing concerns that this could signal a broader disruption in Nigeria’s aviation sector, especially if the strike persists. On the same day, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, was in Minna to commission the new President Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport.
