Godswill Akpabio, the preferred candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), emerged as the Senate President in the 10th National Assembly election.
Akpabio defeated his closest rival, Abdulaziz Yari, with a score of 63 votes to Yari’s 46 votes.
The election was presided over by Sani Tambuwal, the clerk of the national assembly.
The nomination process saw Akpabio nominated by Ali Ndume, while Elisha Abbo nominated Yari.
Some senators-elect protested Yari’s nomination, stating that he was not qualified as a first-time senator.
However, Yari was allowed to stand for the position as a former member of the House of Representatives.
The total votes cast were 109, with Akpabio declared the winner with 63 votes.
Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Seyi Makinde, Dapo Abiodun, and Yahaya Bello were present at the chamber to congratulate Akpabio.
