Michelle Alozie has opened up about why she turned down the United States to wear Nigeria’s colors, choosing connection and culture over convenience — www.naijnaira.com reports.
The 28-year-old forward, born and raised in the U.S. to Nigerian parents from Imo State, made the call before her 2021 Super Falcons debut during the USWNT Summer Series in Houston, as reported by BBC Pidgin.
“I always dreamed of seeing a Nigerian name on a Nigerian jersey,” she told the BBC in an interview that dove into her emotional decision.
She said playing with teammates who share similar roots created an instant bond that felt like family.
“It’s like this built-in sisterhood, and the vibe in camp is unmatched when you’re with people who just get it,” she shared.
Alozie praised Nigerian fans for their unwavering support, especially when games get tough, saying, “It means a lot to play for something bigger than ourselves.”
At the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco, her passion translated into action, netting a 94th-minute rocket to beat South Africa 2-1 in the semis.
That goal — called a “sensational screamer” — booked Nigeria’s place in the final and erased the sting of their 2022 loss.
She’s remained crucial throughout, linking with Chinwendu Ihezuo and delivering both defensively and in attack.
Now eyeing a 10th WAFCON crown, she’s also pushing for more African visibility in the NWSL.
