Former House of Representatives member and ex-presidential adviser, Usman Bugaje, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of using financial incentives to attract politicians from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Bugaje’s remarks come after a string of defections, including that of Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and Ifeanyi Okowa, the 2023 running mate to Atiku Abubakar, who recently joined the APC.
According to Naija News, Bugaje pointed out that money has become a primary tool for the APC in luring key PDP members. He explained that while some defections may be driven by individuals with legal issues, “APC is basically using money to buy off PDP.”
The former lawmaker emphasized the danger of money becoming the central force in Nigerian politics, warning that it could jeopardize the integrity of the country’s democracy. Bugaje stressed the serious consequences of financial influence on political decisions, saying it would lead to the end of both democracy and genuine political engagement.
In response to the defections, the PDP expressed shock, particularly in Delta State, where several prominent members moved to the APC. Acting national chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, stated that the party did not anticipate such a significant shift in membership, but he remains optimistic that the upcoming general elections will reflect the will of the people.
Bugaje also criticized the PDP for its failure to offer effective opposition since Minister Nyesom Wike’s defection to the APC. He lamented that the party had not been challenging the APC on key national issues, pointing to the lack of a strong opposition during debates over matters like emergency rule and the national budget.
