The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced its nominations for the top leadership positions in the Nigerian National Assembly.
Godswill Akpabio, a former minister of Niger Delta affairs, has been nominated for the position of Senate President, while Abbas Tajudeen, a ranking member of the House of Representatives, has been nominated for the position of Speaker.
“The national working committee of the APC met today, Monday, May 8, 2023, to consider reports of consultations and meetings held with the president-elect, His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, other party leaders and stakeholders on zoning arrangements for 10th national assembly leadership positions,” Morka said.
“The NWC noted with respect to the outcome of the meetings held between the president-elect and the leadership of the NWC.
“The NWC called for further and better consultation with necessary stakeholders in order to assure the support of the aspirants to the national assembly leadership positions and members of the party nationwide.”
The APC, which holds the majority of seats in the National Assembly, determines the presiding officers.
Other nominations include Barau Jibrin for Deputy Senate President and Benjamin Kalu for Deputy Speaker.
The party’s National Working Committee met to consider reports of consultations and meetings held with President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other party leaders on zoning arrangements for the leadership positions.
The NWC called for further consultation with necessary stakeholders to ensure the support of aspirants and party members nationwide.
Last week, outgoing Ebonyi Governor David Umahi dropped his bid for Senate President and endorsed Akpabio.
